Description

There are many species of wild rose all over Ireland but the most common is named Dog Rose  or Rosa Canina.

The Dog Rose varies in height from 4 feet to 16 ½ feet depending growing conditions.  Its blooms resemble classic wild rose blooms with five petals and have a colour range from light pink to white. Blooming occurs just once a once a year, usually flowering during spring and summer.

Mature wood from the Wild Rose is very suitable for stickmaking being strong but flexible.  The shaved bark reveals a darkish underbark which is somewhat similar to Blackthorn… though it does not have the purple hue of the Blackthorn.
