All of my sticks are entirely handmade. I source, season and finish all my sticks myself.
My Blackthorn sticks are different to the painted ‘shillelagh’ type that one sees in gift and craft shops. Instead the finish highlights the natural colour of the carefully sanded bark.
As all of my sticks are entirely handmade, they are as close as possible to what nature produced… including the occasional twist, bend or other imperfection. Therefore, they look unique and unashamedly Irish.
Blackthorn often splits while drying out. This is a characteristic of the wood so hairline cracks are common. I season all of my Blackthorn for a minimum of four years so any cracks will have ceased before they are offered for sale.
The dimensions shown under the Additional Information tab are in inches and ounces. The width is the measurement at the tip (bottom) of the stick. Any stick can be shortened to a specified length at no extra cost. Unfortunately, if it is too short – it is too short! It is not practical to add a piece to the tip of the stick.
Guidelines for arriving at the optimum length for you are shown on the Choosing a Stick page.
