Description

Some hikers, trekkers and hill-walkers prefer to use a longer stick -(usually called a staff) – than the traditional walking stick/cane. Although I generally concentrate on making normal length sticks, I occasionally come across shanks which are long enough to be finished as staffs.

This one is a nice neat staff made from Elderberry.  Elderberry is not a heavy wood so its weight is rarely an issue when out trekking.

Not the most common choice for stick-making, Elderberry is hard, straight and lightweight.
When the bark is removed -(almost invariably it has to be at least shaved)- it reveals a nice yellow wood with regularly spaced nodes and irregular grooving.
I usually retain the underbark as it has a most attractive vein effect.
