An Elderberry tree

Old ‘wives tales’ tell us that elderberry had connections with witches and that it could be unlucky to bring a plant into the house. However, if planted outside, it would protect the household against witches!

While it might be regarded as an unlikely choice for stick-making, the wood is hard, straight and lightweight. When the bark is removed -(almost invariably it has to be removed)- it reveals a nice yellow wood with regularly spaced nodes and irregular grooving.
